Where We Are - Brazos Recovery

Lake Whitney, Texas

The River Brazos – Rio de los Brazos de Dios

Brazos Recovery Center is located in the breathtaking countryside of Morgan, Texas, just a quarter of a mile away from the famous Lake Whitney. Completed in 1951, Lake Whitney was created as a result of the Flood Control Act of 1944 in an effort to control flooding on the main stem of the Brazos River – the longest river in Texas.

The Brazos River was found by early Spanish explorers who had gone days without seeing any sign of water. It is thought that when they discovered the Brazos River, they named it Rio de los Brazos de Dios, which translates to The River of the Arms of God. As a place of refuge and spirituality, our remote location plays a huge part in the recovery of our clients, and this connection to the River of the Arms of God is intensely symbolic.

At One With Nature

Lake Whitney is surrounded by rural communities, and parks and lands that are reserved and protected by the Army Corp of Engineers. These areas are home to an abundance of wildlife, flora and fauna. We built the Brazos Recovery Center in this spot because we believe having access to such raw, beautiful nature brings us back down to earth and grounds us. So often are we caught up in our busy lives that we forget to take a moment, pause and appreciate nature. Being able to step out into nature enables us to think more clearly, experience more deeply, and grow closer in our relationship with the creator of it all – God.

Evidence suggests that your environment can have an impact on your stress levels, and we firmly believe this to be true. Spending time outdoors in nature allows us to recenter our perspective, see the bigger picture and adopt a slower pace of life. Reflection, meditation and other spiritual practices are all highly encouraged at Brazos as we embrace the 12 Steps model of treatment. Having access to such a vast expanse of nature allows our clients to adopt these practices more readily.

Brazos Recovery Center is located outside of city limits, benefiting from breathtaking views of the lake and countryside. Our residents can walk to the nearest park and boat ramp and soak in the beauty of their surroundings. As part of our well-being activities, we take groups out on fishing trips during their downtime, and many clients find merely being by the water calming in itself.

We are incredibly fortunate in that our winters are brief and we enjoy glorious sunshine throughout most of the year, which only enhances the natural beauty of our location.

As well as the lake, we have access to Meditation Mountain. This beautiful mountain is a large mesa with hiking trails to the peak, and many places to commune with nature along the way. Hiking trips are popular among our clients; improving both their mental and physical well-being.

Distraction-Free Location

Clients come to us for treatment from all over the country – some from noisy, urban areas full of distractions and temptations that only serve to hinder recovery. Brazos Recovery Center is located in a quiet, rural spot with plenty of outdoor space and calming lakeside views.

We built the center with our clients mental and physical well-being in mind, and are fortunate enough to have so much outdoor space to enjoy, with onsite amenities, including a volleyball court and swimming pool.

As a result, we have seen many residents improve their physical health with increased outdoor exercise, as well as their mental health, with access to nature’s very own meditative spots.
