One to One Therapy - Brazos Recovery

One to One Therapy

What Is One-to-One Therapy?

One-to-one therapy sessions are the cornerstone of any drug treatment program. They are suitable for any addiction at any level of severity or complexity. Sessions are specifically tailored to meet the individual and unique needs of the person seeking treatment and have a proven success rate in most cases to help address and uncover the underlying causes of an individual’s substance misuse.

At Brazos Recovery, our goal is to make sure you and your loved one feel listened to, understood, and supported. There is no ‘normal’ recovery journey, but we find that delivering treatment based on these core principals helps ensure that sustainable, genuine recovery from addiction is possible.

Your loved one will be assigned a therapist based on their specialism, experience, and ability to meet the client’s needs and support them through their recovery journey. This pairing is based on the information provided during the assessment stage and takes into consideration the substance your loved one is addicted to, how long the addiction has been active its severity and the history of any previous therapy. All our therapists have personal experience of addiction and so can genuinely empathize with your loved one, but also hold them to account.

What Happens in One-to-One Therapy?

After the initial discussions around the nature of their addiction, your loved one and their therapist may create some goals, begin to address challenges, reflect on which aspects of treatment are successful, and explore the reasons and feelings surrounding each element.

The subject matter in each session will largely depend on the client and what they would like to get out of the session. We understand that the journey through recovery is not always a smooth one, and there are lessons to be learned from the high and low points life brings. A client may take time to feel comfortable enough to discuss their addiction, particularly if they have had negative experiences in therapy previously or are possibly in denial about whether their drug use is severe enough to warrant therapy.

Our therapists are skilled at establishing a safe, open atmosphere, allowing an opportunity for the client to explore their addiction and learn more about themselves without fear of criticism or hostility. For those that may find expressing themselves more difficult than others, the therapist can gently guide the sessions around topics that typically underpin most addictions, such as their childhood, the highs and lows of their life, and their current mood.

We believe it is essential for your loved ones to feel they can speak freely about their experiences and not be judged for what they tell us, or worry that their private information will be shared with another party outside our treatment center. We hold the highest level of confidentiality in all our practices and ensure that all treatment is provided in a safe, comfortable environment, built on trust and compassion.

One-to-One Therapy aims to help your loved one come to terms with their addiction and to cultivate the self-esteem and motivation to live a life beyond addiction; to be happy, healthy, and making the most of their life.

Our therapists at Brazos Recovery can testify to the life-changing results treatment can have and can collaboratively work with patients towards recovery.

When Should I Use One-to-One Therapy?

One-to-One therapy can help treat any psychological disorder and is the most traditional form of support for people struggling with cognitive issues and addiction. Every client that engages with our treatment plan will have regularly scheduled sessions with their assigned therapist.

Research has shown that many people suffering from addiction may have co-occurring mental health issues such as depression and anxiety, and these disorders are likely to exacerbate a person’s addiction.

Our therapists will establish a healthy, constructive, and productive relationship to explore the addiction and help uncover what lies beneath it, to get to the root of the problem and begin the healing process. It could be the first time a person has engaged in therapy before, or they could have a long, extensive history of treatment, so it is vital that drug and alcohol treatment programs like ours, can provide treatment that takes into consideration the complexity of each individual client and their unique needs.

What Can I Expect From One-to-One Therapy?

Therapy sessions are an opportunity to discuss what lies underneath the impulse to use alcohol or drugs in the hope of unmasking emotions and experiences that have been suppressed by addiction. Other elements of the recovery process will likely uncover significant triggers, realizations, and strong emotions. As your loved one begins to move through the stages of recovery, they can move through denial and into recognition of the pain and distress they have caused to themselves and their loved ones.

Addressing the parts of their life that have become lost or damaged due to addiction requires specialist help and support to ensure taking responsibility does not descend into self-loathing or ongoing blame. This can be a particularly difficult period to work through, especially without the use of drugs or alcohol; however, our therapists have a wealth of experience, offering support, valuable insight, and hope, that going forward with recovery is far better than going back to addiction.

One-to-One Therapy is a regular part of the program throughout the entirety of a client’s time with us. From their medically assisted detoxification, to when they are ready to reduce the intensity of their treatment gradually; from our residential and outpatient programs to an on-site transitional living center, your one-to-one therapist will be there every step of the way.
